What is Terrestrial Education
Telestial Education is like the Light of the STARS (D&C 76:82)Purpose: get a job!, to get gain! (see Helaman 7:21)
Method: competition pressure, stress, force, shame, grades and honors, fear, confusion, deception, job training, indoctrinated, little light/truth, entertainment centered.
TeachingProcess: The Philosophies of men; It is the teaching the philosophies of men in pieces
Results/Dangers: Lack of self-esteem, materialism, greed, fear, “not my responsibility”, lust, power, dishonesty, compartmentalization (blunts the spirit), desensitization, job training. False pride: pride in their own accomplishments not in divine light
Responsibility: The school, the government, others.
Examples: Those that lack learning But behold, they have not learned to be obedient to the things which I required at their hands, but are full of all manner of evil, and do not impart of their substance, as becometh saints, to the poor and afflicted among them; And are not united according to the union required by the law of the celestial kingdom; D&C 105:3-4
Terrestrial Education is like the Light of the MOON and STARS
Purpose: contributing, wise, gain, praises of men, learning, wisdom, real education, understanding
TeachingProcess: Philosophies of men mingled with scripture, great knowledge, NOT THE FULLNESS, Wisdom of Men (see John Taylor)
Results/Dangers: Learned, easy to rely on other (doctors), security, government, jobs, etc.
And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom. (2 Nephi 2:29)
But behold, it is to get gain, to be praised of men, yea, and that ye might get gold and silver. And ye have set your hearts upon the riches and the vain things of this world, for the which ye do murder, and plunder, and steal, and bear false witness against your neighbor, and do all manner of iniquity. (Helaman 7:21)
O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God.(2 Nephi 9:28-29)
Celestial Education The Brightest!, it encompasses The Light of the SUN, MOON and STARS Great education made perfect through Jesus Christ They were given all things because they overcame all things, D&C 76:51-60
Purpose: To help us become like God, our divinly appointed mission education begins where creation stops, Before riches seek God, riches are for helping others, line upon line, give more or takes away (2 Nephi 28:30)
TeachingProcess: It encompasses Telestial and Terrestrial Educations it is the FULLNESS, light receives more light... all things spiritual (D&C 50:24)
Methods: preach of Christ, so all children know where to turn (2 Nephi 25:26) 1 - Seek out Christ!! model for teachers = love; students = humble and teachable 2 - Stages (they build upon each other and you must have all of them) See Below *practice teaching, bring questions to the table, teach each other every week, *have them do presentations every week and parents every quarter.
Results of Celestial Education Service vrs. Earning Humility vrs. Pride Cooperation vrs. Competition Charity vrs. Greed Compassion vrs. Judgement Faith vrs. Fear
Responsibility: the individual
Celestial Education Stages:
FREE ACCOUNTABILITY YEARS 0-8 years old
Goal: Build the Foundation
Characteristics: protected (D&C 57:42), they have a head start on Satan - they are not accountable, no opposition, malleable, time when brain is formed, time when all our beliefs were taught us, they don't have the HG to warn them, Satan can't temp them, but he can influence (pre-school), Parents mold
Role: Taught by Parents!, Parents must be with children these years. Children are not accountable at this stage, great things are required of their parents. Parent's act as the Holy Ghost, she teaches, guides, comforts, they are gaining the ability to listen to the Holy Ghost. She teaches her children how to have companionship of the Holy Ghost. Isaiah says to gently guide those that are young
Main Lesson: I AM OF DIVINE HERITAGE; A CHILD OF GOD They are a CHILD OF GOD!! INFINITELY LOVED BY GOD LEARN TO FEEL THE LOVE OF GOD IN EVERY CELL EVERY DAY Experience love, gratitude and joy every day - shout for joy! Insecurities of woman = they don't know this!! We should experience the love of God (fruit) everyday!
Methods: ASK, "What Does He want me to learn?"
YEARS OF THE SPIRIT (9-12 years old)
Goal: Add upon the Foundation/ Spiritual Fluency The Holy Ghost is worth more than Gold
Characteristics: Can have temptations, Accountable, Adversity: the parents are not the only teacher now
Required Learning: SPIRITUAL FLUENCY (spiritual illiteracy in rampant today)
Role: Parents guide the Child, Celestial School / Godly environment Seek, Recognize and Obey the promptings of the Holy Ghost Strengthen the Family Spiritual Muscles are built by study and immersion Stand in Holy Places
Reject the myth: you have to be in "wicked" settings to become strong
Parents: share spiritual experiences, encourage all the share, Model Repentance, bear testimony, ready to learn, No contention, No force: The SPIRIT First!! The more we learn about God the more we become like God.
Methods: SEEK to recognize and quickly obey! Parables Teach through Symbols Pick an object and find symbols and spiritual meanings example: Elder Bednar's talk, "From Cucumbers to Pickles" Object lessons Scriptures both personal and family Personal Testimony Judge activities not people: Everything Good come from God all else is not of God Recognize the battle we fight is us against the devil not against each other Don't underestimate the many voices outside ourself. Satan has a mission for me too.
Gaining Mastery: It is like learning a harder piece of music. You know the easier one and ready to move to the harder one. This is just like learning to follow the spirit as soon as you have one level learned you are ready for a higher or harder piece. No Contention Repenting Recording of spiritual experiences Immersion of the spirit, workings of the spirit, liahona Personal study, fasting, wholesome and pure Follow the Holy Ghost If you have a good thought quickly obey and your intuition will increase, when we ignore it it decreases Learn so they can be taught by the spirit Inspired Learning Lead by talents, joys, interests, loves, etc. Always ask, "Have you prayed about it?" (especially with math :) There are always opportunities for them to learn by the spirit Give them a topic to write about, then have them pray about it, then write some more. Teach line upon line.... long suffering
CRITICAL YEARS (12-19 years old)
Goal: Specific mission, soul dedicated to God,
Characteristics: trusting priesthood power!! Joseph Smith was this age when he received his calling/mission They can enter the temple opportunity to find out what we must do, What does God have in mind for me? trusted with procreating powers transitioning intensely seeking truth!! build upon their testimony stewardship is themselves! Work on Self
Required Learning: WHO AM I ETERNALLY? WHAT IS MY PURPOSE?
Role: The Child with the Parents as Mentors
Methods: requires TIME - ponder, frequent interviews, counsel, plan, accept intuition, prayer Doctrine of Foreordination (mission) "Leading the ___" by Maxwell "more determined discipleship" know your personal mission/life is acceptable of God Let them learn what they want, Heavenly Father is dumping inspiration upon them Must be IN MOTION for God to guide us (can't steer a parked car) Move and let God direct you Receive your Patriarchal Blessings - God wants to talk to you. You can't stop God from putting you where you need to be - Trust - doubt not! Learn from the prophets and scriptures and inspiration Peers - great groups, spiritually fluent, excited, electric and avoid falling into mandate of our society
Responsibility: Recognize God created them, God designed their curriculum now act upon it
LIGHT OF CHRIST YEARS(19-Adulthood)
Goal: Receive the second comforter
Required Learning: HOW DO I BECOME PURE IN HEART? Having the "actual knowledge" and "assurance that they are pursuing a course which is agreeable to the will of God."
Methods: Continue to gain knowledge. Learning does not stop, it is not a check list of things that must be checked off. Serve others while building the Kingdom of God Endure to the End When the "scales of darkness" on our mind and our eyes fall off and we see more and more when the scales fall off Heaven can open to us all We have been given the power to behold him face to face! Endure the hardships until we're lifted up - exactly what the City of Enoch did and Christ walked the streets Learning NEVER stops, it is not a check list only done in college If people will build a house unto me they shall see my face and be Pure in Heart - ZION!! (D&C City of Enoch - endued hardships until they were lifted up God walks the street of Enoch The "lesser portion" is the chains of Hell Greater portion ... freedom, spirit, Resurrection AND life believe in me - come to through separated from God Lieveth - believed in me you shall never die!! Groaned in the spirit - they're not getting it I want Him to give me what He wants for me!! Gain as much as I can NOW!!
Objections: Separation of Church and State? NO!! Religion should influence government Free to follow the prophet and not what the state requires Recognize the traditions of our fathers We must educate ourselves not the state Men are fee to choose good or evil Avoid, "My kids are doing great"
Scriptural examples of Education
Mosiah 23 love thy neighbor as thyself, 17 - all were taught of God by just men and the result was: righteousness, obedient, prosperity!
Mosiah 24 the Laminite school were taught by false prophets, language of Nephi, but not God and the result was: riches, cunning and wise men, wickedness and plunder.
Alma 23 Alma and Amulek go to the poor people, they were humble because they were forced out of public school. We are more blessed if we are not forced. Rameumptum is the public school - I can climb to the top.
The small lights that God has given us are sufficient to lead us out of Babylon; when we get out, we shall have greater light. TPJS pg. 103
